Arts, Eats and Beats: Grand Bend and area Studio Tour

Baillie’s Picture Framing has always been a strong promoter of the arts in our community. Several years ago, we organized a spring studio tour, an event that allowed visual artists to open up their studios to visitors and show their latest work. Since then, it has grown to include music and the culinary arts, resulting in a renaming to “Arts, Eats and Beats.”
This year, the event takes place on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 2014. Friday night will feature a brand new “Grub Crawl” during which participating restaurants will offer tapas style culinary creations, matched with wine or other drinks. Many of the locations will feature live musicians, including Grand Bend’s own Micheal Vanhevel, a rising star with a crooner voice likened to Bobby Darrin. On Saturday night, The Gables will present legendary blues singer Chuck Jackson, an event to support the Grand Bend Arts Centre. So much more to see and do – check out the full schedule at http://www.grandbendstudiotour.com or drop into Baillie’s or the Grand Bend Welcome Centre for a printed brochure and map.

Baillie’s is very pleased to be hosting three very talented artists during the studio tour: Laura L Wright, Barbara McKnight and Janette Baillie.

Laura Wright was born and raised in Southwestern Ontario in the Ingersoll area. Her formal art education has included studies at H.B. Beal Secondary School, London, under Herb Ariss; York University, Toronto; and Lambton College, Sarnia.

Laura has worked in a variety of media including pottery and soapstone, but concentrates at present on two-dimensional works in collage, coloured pencil, pastel and acrylic. Recent works include explorations into the effects achieved by mixing and layering different materials and media.
Come and meet Laura and view some of her newest work.

Barbara McKnight has retired to the shores of Lake Huron to enjoy the beautiful landscape, flora and fauna on her many excursions into the countryside. The present collection (in oils) is described as “intimate tablescapes” using color and texture to excite our senses and lift our spirits. Her collections contain paintings in watercolor, acrylic and oils. View Barbara’s beautiful paintings at Baillie’s on May 3rd and 4th.

Janette Baillie is a Grand Bend based photographer who draws her inspiration from her natural surroundings. She enjoys shooting waterscapes, landscapes, flora and fauna, abstracts and architecture. She strives to convey a particular mood using light and colour. Her portfolio reflects her interest in nature and traveling. Come and meet Janette and view some of her latest work during the studio tour.

There are many more wonderful artists on the tour. Plan to make a weekend out of it and enjoy all that Grand Bend has to offer.

A simple christmas card…

One of our friends came across a 100 year old Christmas card from the First World War. Sent from the front, it contained the sender’s unit and his service number. It was from PFC Peters, a stretcher bearer in the Huron Regiment. You can find his service number on the government website with an entire history of his service, including where and when he signed on, and how long he served. This framing contains memorabilia related to PFC Peters including his unit badge, a card with the regiment emblem, and a reproduction of the inside of the Christmas card. As you can see, it presents a summary of an important period in a serviceman’s life. This type of treatment can be used for a variety of different situations. How many of them apply to your family history? We can help you get those special mementos out of the shoebox and into a beautiful framed piece you will be proud to display in your home. The total cost of this package, including specialty mat cut outs and a quality wood frame, is around $200.
